Seed – was working on a folk rock tune with Wayne Gillespie, and we went down the murder ballad street. Wayne wrote from the wife's perspective.
Recording – Wayne recorded his vocal and guitar tracks in his Gladesville/Sydney home studio. Here in Auckland I added some bass, Nigel Gavin guitars and Steve Clarkson drums...

I did a strange thing I married for love
Even though my friends warned against it
But he was so strong and I was so young
I just felt so protected

He could put a man in his place with just a look
Or sometimes he might use a strong arm
Even if stares lingered a moment too long
I knew no-one could do me no harm

He had the face of a movie star just like a Clint
Or maybe even Clark Gable
And when the liquor it started to flow
He was always the last left at the table

But when his moods would grow dark and his temper would rise
And we all tried to keep out of sight
And when our child tried to come between us
He’d strike her down just as if it was his right

I could take a blow I’d worn them before
No this was not a new plight
But when he drew blood from our child
I took her and slipped away before night

Until one day when he gave me a call
Said it’s time to say your goodbyes
“I love you mum” I heard my girl say
“And I love you too” was all I could reply

Then he held her up on top
 of that bridge
He stared into the sea below
And from the ground the passers-by saw
Her fall just like a ragdoll

In the wind she hears the cries of her cub
As she looks to the heavens above
Wishing that she could turn back the day
The day that she married for love
